WEBINAR2022-2023 Jefferson Science Fellowships Distinguished Lecture: Mark SeielstadJuly 25, 2023 | 11:00AM - 12:00PM ET Impacts of Climate Change on Global Health: Mitigation and Adaptation Within the past year, the human population exceeded 8 billion. Some estimates suggest that we, together with the animals that feed us, comprise 97% of vertebrate biomass. While economists assume no limits to growth, biologists are skeptical that current patterns of consumption are sustainable. Greenhouse gas emissions and global warming threaten recent gains in global development. The work of USAID is at the forefront of our global efforts to avoid the worst outcomes and adapt to an uncertain future. Two illustrative cases from programs in the Bureau for Global Health’s Tuberculosis and Neglected Tropical Disease Programs will be presented. |

WEBINARTransportation Resilience Addressing Climate Change ChallengesJuly 26, 2023 1:00 PM–2:30 PM ETState agencies and businesses have been improving the resilience of transportation systems to climate change and extreme weather impacts. The Transportation Research Board will host a webinar on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that will highlight emerging evidence-based best practices on resilience planning and projects, resilient recovery, and resilience processes and programs. Presenters will focus on understanding vulnerability and improving resilience to climate change and extreme weather events impacting all modes of transportation. Presenters will also share efforts to integrate resilience in other aspects of the transportation sector, including design, engineering, planning, asset management, operations, maintenance, emergency management, and communications. |

WEBINARClimate-Resilient, Low-Volume Road Design and ManagementAug 7, 2023 1:00 PM–2:30 PM ETExtreme weather impacts to roads can be damaging and costly, but measures for adaptation and storm damage mitigation are available. The Transportation Research Board will host a webinar on Monday, August 7, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that will present useful and practical climate adaptation measures that road designers and managers can implement to help “stormproof” roads and reduce the risk of climate-induced damage. Presenters will share key measures for road maintenance, drainage design, slope stabilization, and debris flow mitigation to prevent or minimize damage from fires and storms. |

WEBINARLife-Cycle Assessment for Pavements and Transportation InfrastructureAug 17, 2023 | 1:00PM - 2:30PM ET Many industrial sectors are increasingly focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. As the largest contributor, making the transportation sector more sustainable is essential to meeting this goal. Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is a critical tool to evaluate the emissions associated with transportation infrastructure and the implementation of strategies to reduce greenhouse gas. TRB will host a webinar on Thursday, August 17, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that will provide multiple perspectives from public and private sectors and academia for stakeholders to learn about the LCA process, current tools and data, the newest trends, and future needs. |

 WORKSHOP
Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Wildland FiresSeptember 13-15, 2023The National Academies Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate invites you to this workshop on September 13-15, 2023, on current understanding of how changes in wildland fire greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions could affect our ability to achieve 'net-zero' GHG emissions targets. This workshop will identify opportunities to improve measurements and model projections of emissions in order to advance understanding and inform management practices that could limit emissions from wildland fires. Participants will consider how changes in emissions from these fires could affect our ability to achieve 'net-zero' GHG emissions targets. Additionally, workshop discussions will consider management practices that could be incorporated in current and future action plans. |

NEW PUBLICATIONPathways to an Equitable and Just Energy TransitionWhile technologies are clearly instrumental in transitioning away from fossil fuel-based energy and toward a decarbonized economy, decisions about which technologies are prioritized, how they are implemented, and the policies that drive these changes will have profound effects on people and communities, with important implications for equity, jobs, environmental and energy justice, health, and more. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions was tasked with assessing the broad range of technological, policy, and societal dimensions of decarbonizing the U.S. economy. The committee produced a 2021 report that provides the U.S. government with a roadmap of equitable and robust decarbonization policies. The next report of the committee will address the broader range of policy actors who play a role in equitable energy transition. |
