In the past, I’ve used my blog to write about midwives,
teachers, and activists who are making a difference in their
communities—and the world. But Eva Nangalo of Uganda is the first hero I’ve
had the chance to profile who is all three. She’s also a wife, a mother, a
farmer, and technically even a radio host.
It’s hard not to be inspired by her story… or wonder when she
has time to sleep. (Answer: She barely does.) For 23 years, as a midwife in
a rural part of the country, she’s gone way beyond the parameters of her
job to make childbirth safer for mothers and babies. Along the way, she’s
mentored countless other midwives who are following in her footsteps.
