The world is in a complicated state and in many places’ chaos, destruction and pain persist. Many things are shifting and changing, on a large scale but also in a smaller radius in our more immediate circumstances and directly in our lives. Through the interconnectedness of not only our global structures but also energetically, one effects the other in some direct or more indirect capacity. When things move and shift, it is much harder to be settled, peaceful, content and calm and instead can leave us feeling overwhelmed, tired and uncertain.
For many Christmas time brings another layer of busyness to our lives, for some it is joyful, others find it difficult – either way there tend to be many aspects and things to think about, prepare, plan and organize. |
Sometimes we can get so swept up in the buzz of the Christmas season, the expectations of those around us and the pressures of flashy advertisements and shiny lights, that it is no surprise that we may forget that this time of year also is about rest, quiet, replenishing, warmth, kindness to ourselves and those around us. When we bring these aspects to the forefront of our mind and into our plans, the potential for simplifying things increases significantly.
With all that is going on in this busy world and in our busy lives, maybe this can be a year in which we shape our winter and Christmas plans guided by Kindness and Simplicity in our minds. Returning to the roots, literally and metaphorically.
Doing fewer things but doing them well and wholeheartedly, finding and creating comfort and joy rather than allowing this season to bring more busyness and pressure to our experience. |
The trees are standing bare, the sun is staying low and when snow covers the world it tends to get quiet. Winter is a time to keep things simple and Christmas is a celebration inviting us to share kindness. When life is simple and filled with kindness, joy is waiting to fill our hearts.

2. Shifu | Firm & Peaceful |
" Inner peacefulness and external firmness - there is always a yin yang balance, that is the beauty of the forms, of the training. If you want your body to be firm - your breathing has to be firm, and your mind, your thought has to be firm. |
| |
If you want peace - your mind, your breath, your qi, your movement have to be peaceful.
Cultivating the muscle (body) and cultivating the internal (mind) - The body and the mind, they are always linked."

3. Root, Rest, Replenish - Winter Self-care Practice
In the spirit of winter, when nature withdraws back into its roots - releasing, resting and restoring - we too are reminded of these aspects. |
The more we can honor them in our daily lives throughout the darker season, the more we can be in tune with our bodies, our wellbeing and the natural cycle of the season that we are part of and that is part of us. |
Here is a simple practice that can be used either to set intentions at the start of your day or to reflect on at the end of it. You will have to try for yourself what works best for you.
Let these three words - Root, Rest, Replenish - guide you toward a slower, calmer, more grounded way of being. |
Morning intention:
- What do I need to stay grounded today?
- What simple action can help me feel connected to myself - breathing, a moment of stillness, a walk, or mindful presence?
| Evening reflection:
- What did I do today that helped me feel grounded?
- Did I pause, breathe, or reconnect with myself in any small way?
Morning intention:
- Where do I need rest today -physically, emotionally, or mentally?
- When can I create space, even briefly, to stop and restore?
| Evening reflection:- Did I honour my need for rest today?
- Where did I push too hard, and where can I be gentler with myself tomorrow?
Morning intention:- How will I nourish myself today?
- What food, movement, or small joy will help me feel more alive and supported?
| Evening reflection:- How did I care for my body today?
- What did I eat, how did I move, and what brought me joy?
- What restored my energy, even in small ways?
End with a simple question: "Have I rooted? Have I rested? Have I replenished today?" Use your answers not as judgement, but as guidance, and the invitation to choose kindness, simplicity, and presence each day. |
Root. Rest. Replenish. Those are the gentle whispers of winter. |
